Hello Friends,

What an eventful year it has been, and we're absolutely delighted to bring you some exciting news! We've recently extended our warmest welcome to a new partner family, Amanda and her two children. They will soon be the proud owners of our 61st affordable house, currently under construction in Middletown. Amanda has wasted no time dedicating herself to her sweat equity hours and we couldn't be more thrilled about this fantastic addition to our community. Stay tuned for updates in the coming months.

In April of this year, we introduced our Veterans Build/L.I.F.T. Home Repairs program, in partnership with Coastal Habitat. To date we have completed five Veterans Build projects and have more in the pipeline. Our construction crew and volunteer teams have also completed six Ramps & Rails and three A Brush With Kindness projects with a number of additional projects lined up for the rest of the year.

We have had several successful events that have provided us with the opportunity to strengthen our community connections as well as provide us with an important source of funding for our affordable housing programs. You can read more about those and our other news below.

Since beginning construction on this single-family home at the end of May, our construction team and volunteers have made remarkable progress. We are grateful for the backing of our local community and businesses, and are especially thankful to two generous, community-oriented local businesses: Fortified Roofing and Window Nation. Fortified Roofing donated and installed the new roof while Window Nation donated all the windows and sent a team of volunteers to assist with the installation.

A heartfelt thank you to The Catholic Daughters of the Americas for their invaluable support, and to New Jersey Natural Gas, Wells Fargo, and WRAT 95.9FM who have been instrumental in the success of this project.

We anticipate that this house will be complete by the end of the calendar year and Amanda and her children will be m. Our next house projects are planned for Fair Haven and Eatontown in the new year. 

Our newly launched Veterans Build/ L.I.F.T. (Local Initiative for Troops) home repairs program is a collaboration with and expansion of Coastal Habitat’s L.I.F.T. Veteran Housing Repairs Program. Working together with Coastal Habitat we are able to serve all of Monmouth County and focus on the housing needs of the growing number of Veterans in our community.

Home repair projects can be overwhelming and costly to a homeowner with a low or fixed income, and this program can alleviate concerns and remedy safety and comfort issues. The program completes minor home repairs and home upkeep projects at no cost to the Veteran. We undertake projects such as ramp and rail installation, widening walkways for wheelchairs, as well as general home repairs and assistance with yard and landscape upkeep. We also offer on a limited basis, subject to availability of materials and installation services, a Roof Deployment program which is part of our wider Veterans Buid/L.I.F.T. program. 

Thanks to the generosity of two local businesses, SRS Distribution and USA Building Maintenance, we were able to kick off the summer with new roofs for two Veteran families in our community. Mrs. Walsh, the widow of US Navy Veteran, Robert P. Walsh, still lives in the house where she and her husband raised their seven children. The roof on her house in Aberdeen was in a state of serious disrepair and we were delighted to be able to partner with SRS Distribution and USA Building Maintenance to provide her with a new roof. US Army Veteran, Paul and his wife Janice, also received a much-needed new roof on their house in Long Branch. Paul served in the US Army during the Vietnam War as a radio operator and received the National Defense Service Medal. When local businesses work together with Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth County we can do great things!

SRS Distribution Inc., a leader in the building products distribution industry, donated the roofing materials for both roofs while USA Building Maintenance Inc., a family-owned commercial roofing company operating in NJ, (5) Boroughs in NY, Connecticut, Delaware, and Pennsylvania, provided the expert installation teams.

We were delighted with the success of our 12th annual “Golf for Homes” outing, held at Beacon Hill Country Club at the beginning of August. The event garnered excellent support from the community, drawing a great crowd for golf and for dinner.

The day kicked off with a buffet lunch that set the stage for the 18-hole golf tournament as golfers showcased their skills and sportsmanship. HFHMC was proud to honor Monmouth County Commissioner Director Tom Arnone during the dinner reception. Director Arnone has consistently championed the cause of affordable housing and community development in Monmouth County, which has made a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals and families. Women Build is a three-day fundraising build event held every Spring. This program allows women to take a proactive step in serving their communities, working under the guidance of construction professionals to improve the community we share. 

This year our Women Build teams completed two Veterans Build projects. Valley Bank was the lead sponsor on opening day and their team of volunteers worked alongside individual women builders on a project in Long Branch. The teams replaced a window, stripped and painted the front porch, pillars, and handrails, and cleaned up the yard, giving the home a much-needed facelift. Our project in Lincroft was sponsored by long-time partner, T&M Associates, as well as new supporter, DeFelice Realty Group. The teams worked together to dismantle and remove an old shed and a fence, repair brickwork, build cabinet doors, and power wash the veteran-owned house.

Our 2nd Annual Pickleball tournament was held at New Shrewsbury Racquet Club in April and took the form of a mixed double tournament. The evening was a lot of fun and raised $18,000 for the launch of our Veterans Build home repairs program. Thank you to everyone who participated, and to the amazing committee and volunteers who helped us organize and run the tournmanent. Special thanks to Sue Finley who did a wonderful job as Silent Auction and 50/50 Raffle Chair and to John Vitollo who donated his time and skills to photograph the evening.
